DoorSkin is designed to repair the damaged pivot area on a hollow-core bifold closet door so you can get the door working again without replacing the whole thing.

Before You Start

Make sure your door is a standard hollow-core bifold closet door and that the damage is in the top or bottom pivot area.

You may need:

DoorSkin

Super glue or wood glue

A clamp

Pliers/Hammer

Flathead screwdriver

Utility knife

Step 1: Remove the door

Carefully lift and remove the bifold door from the track and pivot hardware.

Set it on a flat surface where you can easily access the damaged top or bottom corner.

Step 2: Inspect the damaged pivot area

Look at the part of the door where the pivot pin mounts.

Common signs of damage:

the pin keeps popping out

the hole is stripped or enlarged

the corner is cracked or broken

the old insert is damaged or pushed inside the door

If the rest of the door is still usable and the main issue is the damaged pivot area, DoorSkin is likely a good fit.

Step 3: Remove loose or damaged material

Remove any broken wood, loose filler, damaged insert material, or anything else that is no longer holding properly.

You want a clean area for DoorSkin to fit into.

If an old plastic insert is stuck:

try pulling it out with pliers

use a flathead screwdriver to help loosen it if needed

Do not over-remove material. Only clear out what is loose, broken, or in the way.

Step 4: Test fit DoorSkin

Before using glue, slide DoorSkin into place and make sure it fits the damaged pivot area correctly.

It should sit securely in the repair area and align with the pivot location.

Do a dry fit first so you know how it will sit before final installation.

Step 5: Apply glue

Apply a small amount of glue to the contact areas where DoorSkin will sit inside the door.

Do not overdo it. A little goes a long way.

Use enough to help hold the piece in place, but not so much that excess glue becomes messy or interferes with the fit.

Step 6: Install DoorSkin

Press DoorSkin firmly into the damaged pivot area.

Make sure it is seated correctly and aligned the way it should be before moving on.

If needed, wipe away any excess glue.

Step 7: Clamp and let it set

Clamp the repaired area so DoorSkin stays firmly in place while the glue sets.

Let it cure based on the glue instructions you are using.

Do not rush this step. Letting the repair set properly is important.

Step 8: Reinstall the pivot hardware

Once the repair is set, reinstall the pivot pin or related hardware into the repaired area.

Make sure everything sits properly and feels secure before rehanging the door.

Step 9: Rehang the door

Put the bifold door back into place and reinstall it in the track and pivot hardware.

Open and close it a few times to make sure it is seated correctly and working smoothly.

Step 10: Check the fit

After reinstalling:

make sure the door opens and closes properly

check that the pivot is holding securely

confirm the door is not leaning, rubbing, or popping out again

If needed, make small hardware adjustments after the repair is complete.

Let the glue set fully before rehanging the door

Do not force the hardware back in if something looks off — check alignment first
